Sunday morning worship at First Presbyterian Church is framed by the traditional liturgy of our Reformed faith and heritage. This is to say that the elements of our service ... gathering, prayer, praise, music, confession, offering, sending ... are all organized around the central focus of worship, God's Word speaking to us in the world today. We confess that God's Word comes to us in three manifestations in worship: 1) God's Word given to us in Jesus Christ, "...the Word become flesh, living among us, full of grace and truth," (John 1:14); 2) God's Word given to us in the readings of Holy Scripture, the Old and New Testaments of the Bible; and 3) God's Word given to us through proclamation and interpretation of Scripture for the Church today through faithful preaching and administration of the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper.
At First Presbyterian Florence we make every effort to offer worship that is interesting, inspiring, challenging - spiritually and intellectually - in order to feed the needs of all who come to hear God's Word for them. In worship we emphasize our awareness that God is calling us into relationship with Himself, as well as with one another ... all who gather in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Serving God in worship requires the participation of all, working together, filled with gratitude and joy that God never gives up seeking us out in order to give us the amazing gifts He freely offers to all ... the forgiveness of our sins and everlasting life in the joy of His Kingdom.
The feeling of reverence in our historical sanctuary is enhanced by stained glass windows, which date from 1898. The displays of light through these works of art, two of which are Tiffany, elicit introspective yet uplifting emotions from worshipers, supporting our experiences of worship.
Our services of worship follow the calendar of the liturgical year and involve lay participation in liturgy, hymns, both new and traditional, corporate confessions of prayer and faith, and always, the sermon.
The church year begins with special services during Advent, our Christmas Eve service of Lessons and Carols, communion and candlelight. During Holy Week, First Presbyterian joins with other Presbyterian Churches (USA) in the Shoals for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter sunrise services. World Communion Sunday, Reformation Sunday and All Saints Sunday are also special services we celebrate throughout the year.
The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month. On days when we receive communion, elders go out, visit and serve the Lord's Supper to homebound members after the morning service.
We invite you to come and see ... joining with us in the joy of serving God through worship.
